Will Wenger buy in January???

The Annual report of Arsenal is out. It says we have made a pre tax profit of 6.7 Million quid in the fiscal year ending May 2013. The revenue increased to 242 million GBP from 235 million GBP in the year ending May2012. But if we look closely into the accounts we will find that the increased revenue is due to 11 miIllion GBP  increment in commercial income, which was  largely due to the fact that we have started to count our newly penned deal with Emirates airline. Once again without sales of player and loaning players out we would have made an operating loss.

In the summer Wenger has already got rid of many fringe players who were providing no real depth to the squad or who were not really motivated to do so ( read Chamakh, Arshavin). We loaned out the usual suspects but I reckon the loans fees would be significantly lesser than what we received last term. The wage bill is now over 150 million quid . It not exactly surprising that Wenger went for Flamini and Sanogo as they were free and  a bit cheaper than other targets we were after. With net 32.5 million spent this season we have already spend the extra broadcasting income that were available to us this summer due to the new deal.  This would mean that with the space created in the wage bill and the cash reserve we have, we can still buy a player of around 20-25 million and spend an 100 k-150 k a week on wages.

But the question comes to this whether Wenger will spend or  not in January?? If all goes well and Arsenal qualifies to the the group stage of champions league as well as are in the top 2 in the premier League, then I, don't see Wenger spending any money. He knows this season is not about champions league as he would ideally look to proceed to quater final and that would be it. Reaching the Quarter-final would provide the club with extra 5-7 million GBP . He would put his focus on FA cup and Premiership. He knows that the squad is too thin to launch major challenges on any other front. A 25 million striker might be the answer but knowing Wenger, if all goes well till January he will not spend the money and rather wait till the summer so that the club's account can be managed to show a healthy profit again. If push comes to shove he might buy player for squad depth  but I don't see any world class signing in the January window. I, hope Wenger proves me wrong  but I am pretty sure that he won't.

  1. We need a world class striker and 25 million is very less for this :-)
